I just can't imagine them having a rabid fanbase in Vegas.
Yeah, all fans in the league will want to take a road trip to see their favorite team play in Vegas all the time, especially NYR fans with those non stop flights to Vegas out of JFK on JetBlue.
Whatever, will be interesting if it happens |

How does the expansion work again? Would Vegas be able to steal a group of players from each team or something? Or would they just get a ton of early draft picks? Better not be touching are players |

What a (frank)ing mess. I don't know what was so hard about moving Arizona to Seattle and Florida to Quebec. Boom, no expansion or realignment needed, and two teams who've lost money for the last decade turn into new markets.
But the league loves expansion for the multi billion dollar expansion fee that each new team has to put up. Nevermind the watered down talent pool and the Florida/Arizona taxpayers who have been shelling out millions in these money pits. |

I am not sure how they would do another expansion draft, but in the past yeah, the new teams would draft from current team rosters.
I remember in the 1993 draft teams were allowed to protect about 15 players or so and first and 2nd year players were exempt.
That's why we couldn't keep Richter and Vanbiesbrouck anymore, because we could only protect one goalie. |

I hate that poop. GM's work hard to build rosters to win, then the league says to bad cause we want to make more money and expand. |

with the salary cap an expansion draft would be a whole new ballgame
what if the Rangers were to expose Nash in hopes of getting cap relief? would guys with NMC's be exempt? lots of questions would have to be answered |

Like you said, expansion fees for the owners. Maybe the NHL has planned it all along and that's why they decided to make it 16 teams in the East and only 14 in the West. Apparently Seattle or Quebec City will be the 32nd team after Las Vegas and they could both be expanded at the same time.

From the 2000 expansion draft.
26 of the 28 teams existing in the league at the time of the draft were each allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards. The Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators had their entire rosters protected, as they were the two newest franchises in the league, only being in existence for one and two years respectively.
I think that a Vegas team is an interesting idea...seems like the stands would be full of more of the away team's fans though. Like I could see a bunch of Rangers fans planning a 3 day trip to Vegas based around seeing the Rangers play. Would be fun...I heard the arena is also being built with a lot more emphasis on suites than regular stadium seating. |

You talking about the one in the MGM? It kinda has to because it was built for boxing and concerts. |

Are you talking about the MGM Grand Arena? They're building a brand new arena for the hockey team and I do know that MGM is a part owner in the new arena as well. |

So, given how well Talbot played for us last year, do the Rangers try to keep Hank fresh by giving Talbot more games this season?

Lundqvist played a lot of games last year, regular season, Olympics and then every game of the playoffs.
Almost 100.
Definitely a good idea to play Talbot more this year and I'd would say keep Lundqvist under 55 games if possible. |

Pretty much my thoughts too. I know Hank hates sitting and wants to be in every game, but now that we have what seems from last year like a really good back up, he needs to rest more. |

if you look at the Islanders Cup years, I don't think people realize that they only use to play Billy Smith half the games in the regular season so he'd be completely rested for long playoff runs. He was then insane in the post season and absolutely unbeatable in overtime playoff games, and a lot of that could be attributed to him having a lot left in the tank by not being overworked in the regular season. |

It seemed to immediately work out quite well for the Rangers. |

That's one example though. Guys like Roy, Brodeur, Hasek, Belfour and a host of other greats carried the heavy load of games played. I do agree Talbot should play at least 25 games this season and there is no reason why he shouldn't.
He looked more than capable during the regular season and it will only help to have a rested Hank in the postseason. |

definitely, it was time for them to hand the reigns to Richter full time and boy did he ever take off that year |

Still holds the Ranger record for wins in one season.
He was unreal that year and up until he started running into injury problems. Even in the lean years, when he was healthy, he was one of the few bright spots. |

the Hockey News put together a fictional Vegas expansion team where we'd lose Kevin Klein:

I guess SI feels Skjei will be here, they will re-sign Staal and/or McIlrath will actually be a pro.

I was wondering about that too. If he plays more games and plays really well I wonder if he could be used too get another piece for this team in a trade. Don't know if we have any other goalie prospects coming up in the system though. |
